CinemaCon: 'Deadpool 2' Moving Forward With Tim Miller, Ryan Reynolds

Deadpool 2 is moving forward with director Tim Miller and star Ryan Reynolds, Fox confirmed Thursday at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

As reported, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who wrote Deadpool, are writing the script for the sequel. The original earned $757.3 million worldwide.

Fox kicked off its Thursday morning presentation with one of the most energetic openings of the theater exhibitors conference, bringing out Vanilla Ice to perform "Ice Ice Baby" with a slew of backup dancers in an ode to the studio's $2.8 billion Ice Age franchise.

Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution, took the stage wearing a sequined blue-and-silver outfit before beginning his presentation with a sneak peek of Ice Age: Collision Course.

Anna Kendrick, Zac Efron and Adam DeVine appeared to present extended footage from their comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. The studio also showed footage from X-Men: Apocalypse, Assassin's Creed and Independence Day: Resurgence with stars Vivica A. Fox, Jesse T. Usher, Maika Monroe and Jeff Goldblum taking the stage.

The presentation also highlighted Fox Searchlight’s The Birth of a Nation, which was acquired at Sundance in the biggest sale in the festival’s history. It’s not often an indie is included in a studio’s big presentation, indicating that Searchlight is putting all of its support behind the slave drama, which is set to open in theaters in October. Director-star Nate Parker and actress Aja Naomi King both took the stage to introduce the new trailer.

King described the project as "a film that challenges us all to face our past in a way that could inspire us to eradicate injustice."

Given the confab has buzzed with discussion about the controversial Screening Room, Fox made a point to speak on its continued support of the theatrical experience.

"Fox will always support that experience first and foremost," said Fox chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos.

DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg also spoke out in support of the moviegoing experience.

"For the film industry, the home viewing experience has certainly become a very important part of the entertainment landscape," he said. "But in a movie theater, life distractions are sealed off outside those four walls.

"We don’t applaud at our televisions, we don’t applaud at out iPhones, we don’t applaud at our iPads. But at a great experience in a movie theater, we applaud," he added. "That is the power of the moviegoing experience. In the movie theater, movies owns us. This amazing experience just gets better and better, and that is because of all of you who work in exhibition. So as one of the film-loving, popcorn-smelling addicted moviegoers, I want to say thank you to every one of you."

The DreamWorks Animation section included footage from its next release, Trolls.
